ARTIST BIO

Camilla engages in a mixed media/disciplined, process-driven visual art praxis. She has a BAFA, an MCA, and is currently a PhD candidate at UND, Fremantle in Creative Practice Research. She has exhibited in Perth, regional Western Australia, interstate and overseas, where she has received awards for her work, and is represented in public and private collections. She was curator of the Mandorla Art Prize (2009-2012), and worked for the “Art for Change” organization in New Delhi (2016) as an international artist in residence.

Camilla initially taught Visual Art in secondary schools around Western Australia, and also in Papua New Guinea as a PALMS volunteer. She moved later to adult education at TAFE in Leederville WA, teaching Visual Art to adults who live with disability. She then worked in a similar capacity at DADAA in Fremantle.

Camilla now mentors adults privately  through the NDIS, and conducts Visual Art workshops in educational and cultural institutions around Western Australia. As a practitioner, she continues to participate in national art prizes to  engage with other artists, and to connect with the public at large.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice is process-driven, and examines the “materiality” of drawing and painting as a sensory experience. In making art I trust in my intuition, and think through my senses to gain access to deeper integrated realities. I become totally immersed in my materials at hand, enabling images to emerge and materials to have a presence and voice of their own. I often work upon fragile substrates, which include wax and delicate oiled paper and tissued “skins”. An art residency in Delhi provided me inspiration for the installation "Delhi" (photographed below), which demonstrates my enthralled response to the heart, the grit and the layers of that city in “skins” and wax.
